*This deft, nuanced examination of identity, destiny, and agency is a surprisingly tender addition to the Marvel canon。" —Kirkus Reviews, starred review
*"This mischievous origin story is sure to satisfy fans of the popular character。" —Booklist, starred review
Selected for the ILA-CBC 2020 Young Adults' Choices reading list。
This is the first of three young adult novels from New York Times best-selling author Mackenzi Lee that explores the untapped potential and duality of heroism of popular characters in the Marvel Universe。
Before the days of going toe-to-toe with the Avengers, a younger Loki is desperate to prove himself heroic and capable, while it seems everyone around him suspects him of inevitable villainy and depravity 。 。 。 except for Amora。 Asgard's resident sorceress-in-training feels like a kindred spirit—someone who values magic and knowledge, who might even see the best in him。
But when Loki and Amora cause the destruction of one of Asgard's most prized possessions, Amora is banished to Earth, where her powers will slowly and excruciatingly fade to nothing。 Without the only person who has ever looked at his magic as a gift instead of a threat, Loki slips further into anguish and the shadow of his universally adored brother, Thor。
When Asgardian magic is detected in relation to a string of mysterious murders on Earth, Odin sends Loki to investigate。
As he descends upon nineteenth-century London, Loki embarks on a journey that leads him to more than just a murder suspect, putting him on a path to discover the source of his power—and who he's meant to be。

I *really* wanted to like this book。 Young adult Loki on his first mission, but I felt the love ark was so misplaced。 And Odin too harsh on Loki - misplaced again。 The double-double crossing just predictable but it could have been so much more。 The whole story could have been so much more! I'm a little disappointed。 。 。 But I am a merciful person。 I *really* wanted to like this book。 Young adult Loki on his first mission, but I felt the love ark was so misplaced。 And Odin too harsh on Loki - misplaced again。 The double-double crossing just predictable but it could have been so much more。 The whole story could have been so much more! It's a story of Loki。。。 how could I not read this one。 While it's fun to see a young version of our familiar characters, I wasn't overly impressed with the plot and execution。 Overall entertaining, but lacking a certain depth of story。 It's a story of Loki。。。 how could I not read this one。 While it's fun to see a young version of our familiar characters, I wasn't overly impressed with the plot and execution。 Overall entertaining, but lacking a certain depth of story。 。。。more

i love marvel and loki has always been one of my favourites but i didn’t enjoy this very much for a few reasons:1。 there was no talk of time。 ever。 at all。 the beginning is set when loki is younger but we don’t know how old。 and in part two it’s known that some years have past but again, no mention of exactly how long。 and when he is sent to midgard it never says the year it which matters a lot for picturing how things look! it’s only because i’m a history nerd and they mentioned that the choler i love marvel and loki has always been one of my favourites but i didn’t enjoy this very much for a few reasons:1。 there was no talk of time。 ever。 at all。 the beginning is set when loki is younger but we don’t know how old。 and in part two it’s known that some years have past but again, no mention of exactly how long。 and when he is sent to midgard it never says the year it which matters a lot for picturing how things look! it’s only because i’m a history nerd and they mentioned that the cholera outbreak had already happened that i knew it was past 1836 but that still is very vague!! 2。 i’ve never read any of mackenzi lee’s other books but i just didn’t like her writing。 it didn’t keep me captivated and it just wasn’t。。。pretty if that makes sense。 i also feel like the ending was REALLY rushed and anticlimactic and it didn’t resolve anything at all。 they were still in the major scene like 3 pages before the end。 3。 loki’s character wasn’t given justice in my opinion。 one moment he was the lying, scheming up-to-no-good person we all think of him as and the next he was this insecure, sensitive, confused guy we’ve never seen。 and i totally get that the person thing can be a cover that he shows to the world because he’s afraid of revealing his true self and all that but it wasn’t written as such。 it was written like it was inconsistent and he was two completely separate characters。 the one thing I LOVED though was that he blatantly said that he was pansexual and genderfluid which we’ve all know for years but it’s nice to have in writing。 finally a bit of representation in the MCU 。。。more

I've always thought that Loki had such potential that the movies completely skipped over。 While this book didn't go as far as I would have likes, I still enjoyed it, and it's better than nothing。 It was a fun read that I quickly went through。 I've always thought that Loki had such potential that the movies completely skipped over。 While this book didn't go as far as I would have likes, I still enjoyed it, and it's better than nothing。 It was a fun read that I quickly went through。 。。。more

yeah this is it, this is everything I could want from a Loki adaptation。 if the show even gives us half of this, I’ll be happy。 p。s。 all hail theo bell, true king of midgard

I really liked the book, but found the ending way too rushed。

“you're already the villain in everyone's stories, loki; why not start playing your part?” 4/5 stars。 a very, very enjoyable read for both marvel and original norse mythology fans but i just felt like it could have been a little bit more。 - overall thoughts - i liked this book a lot! i thought it was such had such an interesting plot, where even if the main character wasn’t loki, i still would have enjoyed reading it。 strange, magical murderers happening in victorian london? the main characte “you're already the villain in everyone's stories, loki; why not start playing your part?” 4/5 stars。 a very, very enjoyable read for both marvel and original norse mythology fans but i just felt like it could have been a little bit more。 - overall thoughts - i liked this book a lot! i thought it was such had such an interesting plot, where even if the main character wasn’t loki, i still would have enjoyed reading it。 strange, magical murderers happening in victorian london? the main character’s slow-decline from “trying so hard to be the hero” to “accepting himself as the villain”? what could possibly go wrong with these tropes? for starters, let’s just get the cons out of the way because there’s so few of them。 (please keep in mind that this is just my opinion, and i still think that this was a great book! most of the “problems” that i found with it, was due to my own extraordinarily high-expectations, which were unfair to put on the book。 i definitely recommend reading this with an open mind!) i think that the book could have been deeper and could have had a more developed storyline。 i understand that this is a young-adult novel, but i think that the general idea for the book could have been played out and have meant a lot more。 to me, it seemed a little bit rushed。 i’m one of those weird readers who love to see their favorite characters struggle (and i get how that’s not everyone’s thing; in which case, this book would be perfect for you!) and i just don’t think loki had that。 i wanted to read this because i wanted to read about “an innocent prince desperate to prove himself until he realizes he’ll never be anything other than a villain” and i just got “someone who thought that they were a villain the entirety of the book, but until the last few pages, acted like a hero”。 it was good, just not what i was expecting。 specific things i loved about this book: - the representation! i was originally going to review this book as three stars, but the representation made it four。 i loved the way that loki was portrayed in this book as opposed to how he’s normally portrayed in mainstream-media。 his gender-fluidness and sexuality was something that was so casual, as if he was so accepting of himself that he never really noticed it。these weren’t things that set him apart, things that he needed to get over to love himself, it was simply the way he was- the side characters!! theo, mrs。 s, and gem were like the support beams of the book and i thought that they were written exceptionally well。 mrs。 s had the struggles of being a woman and theo had the struggles of being gay in this time period and i think that both of those heavy topics were dealt with exceptionally well- the love interest, if that’s what you could call amora? i absolutely adored the way her and loki’s relationship was written and i definitely think that their relationship was something that proved the book was capable of having well-developed scenes- loki/thor banter this is something that is an essential in any norse mythology book and this one definitely delivered! between all of the other fairly dark elements of the book, reading their interactions was a light-hearted need - conclusion - in conclusion, this was a really fun and quick read that handled all of the right topics the right way。 read the book with no expectations, and you won’t be let down。 in fact, you’ll be impressed。 Loki: Where Mischief Lies is an impressive read and Mackenzi Lee is an impressive author。 he could be the witch。 he could be the villain。 he could be the trickster, the schemer, the self-serving god of chaos, prove the mythology books right。 。。。more

Loki was always my favourite Marvel-character and I love him even more now。 Still… this kid broke my heart in a million hurting pieces。I just want him to be happy, to finally be accepted… it’s really tragic becoming a villain and all… he just needed someone, who believed in him。 To be precise: He just needed his father to believe in him。Loki is such a complex, twisted, adorable, fucked up person。 I love it。 The author did a really, really brilliant job in portraying him。 The whole book was so mu Loki was always my favourite Marvel-character and I love him even more now。 Still… this kid broke my heart in a million hurting pieces。I just want him to be happy, to finally be accepted… it’s really tragic becoming a villain and all… he just needed someone, who believed in him。 To be precise: He just needed his father to believe in him。Loki is such a complex, twisted, adorable, fucked up person。 I love it。 The author did a really, really brilliant job in portraying him。 The whole book was so much fun and especially the dialogue was great, I loved every second of Loki being a clever, witty smartass。So, who is Loki?Loki isn’t a hero, that’s for sure。 He isn’t that brave, but I don’t think, he’s a coward either。 It’s very natural to be scared, when fighting a monster。 Or being selfish and not taking a bullet for a friend。 He’s just a normal person, like the rest of us。In his heart, all Loki ever wants, is being accepted by his father。 That’s the tragedy of it all。 Odin never gave Loki his unconditional love like Thor。 He never told Loki, he believed in him。 He always made it clear, he expected Loki to disappoint him。 Odin was afraid of his magical powers and didn’t help his son growing into a powerful man like Thor。Odin saw Loki’s way of thinking and wanted him to change。 He loved him despite his twisted mind, not for it。 So yes, Loki was destined to disappoint his father and fail at being accepted, because, let’s be honest, Odin and Thor are self-righteous, narrow-minded bastards and for them, there is only one way of being a hero, of being strong and of being a good king。 (Don’t get me wrong, I like Odin and Thor。 But they just don’t understand Loki。)Loki is clever and cunning and selfish, but still, he never meant anyone any harm。 He could have been a great general and strategist, and instead became a great criminal。 Well, your loss Odin。Loki is very self-destructive in a way。 He loves seeing things being destroyed and burned。 I think, that’s because he always seeks attention。 And because, of course, he loves chaos and breaking the orderly routines of the people around him。 Also, he is very insecure。 He never learned to believe in himself, because no one ever believed in him。 That’s why he loved Amora or rather, loved the way he feels around her。 She accepted him。 But it wasn’t really (great/true) love on his part。 Loki can’t love anyone, until he feels worthy of love。 He just has that all-consuming fear of disappointing people。 He knows he’s going to disappoint them。 He’s just no hero, baby。 And he isn’t a great, evil, burn-down-and-conquer-all villain either… His tricks and schemes are more subtle, his motivations more complex。 Anyways, I also need to mention his great, genderfluid style。 He has so much elegance and class。 Also, I really liked his squabbles with Thor。 These two will never understand each other, but damn, they have a great dynamic。The plot was also nice, it encompassed Loki’s journey of becoming the Trickster, God of Mischief, witch, Lord of Darkness etc。 that we know and love。 The ending was a bit abrupt, though。 I would have liked just a bit more insight in Loki’s motivations and thoughts。 Otherwise, you don’t have to explain everything。 In the end we all know our Trickster and we understand his actions, maybe better than Loki himself。 He has so many contrary, conflicting thoughts and emotions … he’s just a mess。 And it’s really fun figuring him out。 。。。more

This book。 Oh, this book。 There's a lot to love here, but there's also an awful lot of frustrating。 This is a book that cannot exist outside the MCU; it's a book that's absolutely stifled by being forced to comply with the MCU。 This book desperately wants to be Agent of Asgard, but it can't be, because this Loki needs to go on to be who we see in the movies。 I love some things about this--how Loki describes Asgard's take on gender and sex, how it's Loki not being martial rather than Loki being q This book。 Oh, this book。 There's a lot to love here, but there's also an awful lot of frustrating。 This is a book that cannot exist outside the MCU; it's a book that's absolutely stifled by being forced to comply with the MCU。 This book desperately wants to be Agent of Asgard, but it can't be, because this Loki needs to go on to be who we see in the movies。 I love some things about this--how Loki describes Asgard's take on gender and sex, how it's Loki not being martial rather than Loki being queer and nonbinary that's seen as weird。 I hate some things about it--it chooses the darkest path most often, when I think there could have been some good bittersweet set-up done by choosing some less dark paths。 Also I do not understand why Loki gives up the game of lies at the end。 Odin has no proof this *wasn't* the Enchantress' work。Worth a read, but be aware there are some triggering things in this with regards to death, and that this can be a very frustrating book。 。。。more

At most a 2。5*?First I would like to say Loki is my favourite Marvel character of all time。 Second, this is a confusing review to write。 On one hand, I enjoyed the concept (however, if did feel a bit like a fanfic at times), and on the other, the characters didn’t feel like the ones from the marvel universe。 Amora (a new character) felt like she was Loki, she had dialogue and action that felt like something he would have done in the movie。 I also found Amora terrible, I hated her character from At most a 2。5*?First I would like to say Loki is my favourite Marvel character of all time。 Second, this is a confusing review to write。 On one hand, I enjoyed the concept (however, if did feel a bit like a fanfic at times), and on the other, the characters didn’t feel like the ones from the marvel universe。 Amora (a new character) felt like she was Loki, she had dialogue and action that felt like something he would have done in the movie。 I also found Amora terrible, I hated her character from the get go (super whiny)。 All the characters were super under developed and it just made the book feel lost。 If you were to take out the names of the characters ( Loki, Thor, Odin, etc) the book would have worked the same, maybe better。The story was incredibly predictable。 I was able to guess who the ‘villain’ was going to be by the 50 page mark。 LGBTQ+ themes (ie。 gender fluidity, same sex relationships, etc) where mentioned but it was in no way a prevalent part of the story。 I would have liked to see these ideas fleshed out better (Mackenzi Lee did a good job with the m/m romance in The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue)。 Because these ideas weren’t well integrated, it looked like they were added just to attract a broader audience。 I thought this book was fun and had major potential, but overall it left me disappointed。 I don’t recommend this to anyone picking it up just because it is about Loki。 。。。more

I'm not sure about this one。 Entertaining enough, but I have not read much about Loki as a character, so I can't tap into that history。 Without that paradigm, it is a fairly straightforward kids fantasy novel, although with very creepy overtones。I gave up on this halfway through, and made myself finish it off。 I'm not sure about this one。 Entertaining enough, but I have not read much about Loki as a character, so I can't tap into that history。 Without that paradigm, it is a fairly straightforward kids fantasy novel, although with very creepy overtones。I gave up on this halfway through, and made myself finish it off。 。。。more
